I Was a Washington D.C. Intern :: Essays Papers
I Was a Washington D.C. Intern On June 9, 2003, my life took an interesting turn. It was a sunny day. Blue skies, humidity insanely high, and I found myself at 4th Street and Constitution in Washington, D.C. I stood before an angled architectural masterpiece by famed architect I.M. Pei; its pointed corners jutted out towards the grassy Mall and Capitol Hill as if it were some sort of Picasso-esque compass pointing simultaneously towards all the tourist hot spots. (The one corner, purportedly the sharpest building corner in the world, wore a dark gray spot about eye level where thousands if not millions of tourists had touched it just to see how sharp it really was). I found myself standing before it, not as tourist . . . but as an employee on my first day of work. It all seemed a little overwhelming. How I ended up there still seems like a dream even today. Back in early 2001, while working in an art museum library in Nashville, Tennessee, I heard about the internships at the National Gallery of Art. They have quite the reputation in the art world. I bemused myself by daydreaming of one day being an intern there. At the time I heard about them I most certainly wasn't a good candidate. I only had the one art museum gig under my belt and I still really lacked direction in my career ambitions. But fast forward to 2002. I was no longer working at the art museum library (the position was eliminated due to budget cuts) and I was no longer living in Nashville (I moved to Tucson to attend SIRLS). There's probably nothing else like losing your job to really make you figure out what you want to do with your life. I realized several things: I wanted to continue working in an information provision setting, and I wanted to work with visual collections, spe cifically photographs. Because of those goals, I chose to immediately find my way in at the Center for Creative Photography as soon as I arrived on campus in Tucson. I started out as a volunteer and would go on to do an internship there. This critical experience was exactly what I needed to boost my resume to the level of D.C. intern candidate. So . . . six full months before June 9, 2003, I applied for an internship at the National Gallery of Art.
Encouraging Gun Ownership :: Guns Weapons Rights Amendments Essays
Encouraging Gun Ownership Introduction I. What is the foundation of modern technology? It's the history of the gun. Thesis Statement: I will persuade you in that, (1) federal gun control laws are unconstitutional, and (2) I will prove the 2nd Amendment is both a "State" and "Individual Right." Body I.The foundation of our country is based in English Bill of Rights and the American Revolution. A. What is the difference between the Declaration of Independence, the U. S. Constitution and the "Bill of Rights?" 1. The Declaration of Independence gives the reasons, as to why America wanted seperation. 2. The Constitution gives the federal government certain powers. 3. The "Bill of Rights" limited the power of the federal government. B. The views of gun control advocates. 1. Gun control saves lives. 2. When America was founded guns only shot one bullet at a time. 3. Gun control will keep guns out of the hands of criminals. 4. Children should not have guns. 5. Gun control will reduce the hazards to law enforcement. 6. If citizens carry guns, there will be daily shoot-outs in the streets. 7. We don't want to ban deer rifles, just assault rifles. 8. Why do you need an assault rifle? 9. The entertainment industry is not at fault, it's the gun's fault! 10. The 2nd is a collective right and not an "Individual Right." C. My rebuttal to gun control advocates. 1. Vehicle control saves more lives than gun control. 2. The musket was an assault rifle, like the AK-47 is today. 3. If you don't want criminals to have guns, keep them behind bars. 4. As a child I had guns, and I came out ok. 5. Law enforcement is often the problem, remember Rodney King. 6. Crime has gone down in States with right to carry laws. 7. The Violence Policy Center wants to vilify the deer rifle. 8. Who knows what the future holds? Do you remember Hilter? The economic fall-out of 1929? 9. The gun's fault? Could it be society has been socially conditioned, into violence behavior? 10. The 2nd is both a "State" and "Individual Right." (historical) II. I defy my opponents to show in the "Bill of Rights" where it bars any particular type of firearm. A. I lawfully purchased the AK-47, with in the frame-work of the Constitution. The federal government allowed it to be imported. The State of Texas allowed it to be sold, thus making its ownership Constitutional. (legal) B. My views are better than my opponents views, because the 2nd Amendment in the "Bill of Rights" is intended to limit the power of the federal government, and not that of the States.

Encounters with Death in The Masque of Red Death Essay examples -- Mas
Encounters with Death in The Masque of Red Death à à à After reading Edgar Allan Poe's "The Masque of Red Death" (317-22), the reader can only conclude that death is the theme once again in another thrilling horror tale. Other critics such as Patricia H. Wheat, view this tale as a battle between life and death (51-56). Yet, Leonard Cassuto brings an interesting theory to this tale--"According to the narrator's own account, no one survives the Red Death. The only one who(lives) is Death. The narrator must be death himself" (317-20). Reflecting back to the various critical analogies on tone, character, and allegory on "The Masque of Red Death" a certain aspect of this work has yet to be defined. The plague that devastated a whole countryside could only be described. Could it be that Poe uses this fiction to chronicle his own encounters with death in his own life? To better understand this viewpoint a short summary is incorporated: à " The Red Death had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was its Avatar and it's seal-the redness and the horror of blood. There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution. The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim was the pest ban, which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy of his fellow men. And the whole seizure, progress, and termination of the disease were the incidents of half an hour" (Poe 317-22). à In this passage Poe describes a plague that death uses to take its victims. Mormonism – Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
I. IntroductionMormons is the common name of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a Christian body to United States origin. The name is from the prophet Mormon, whose writings, members believe, form the sacred Book of Mormon.The present-day church is descended from the persecuted sect that established a self-sufficient colony in the barren dessert of Utah in 1847. The Mormons still have their major strength in Utah, but have expanded into other sections of the country and have made converts in many foreign countries. Headquarters are in Salt Lake City, Utah (Davies, 2003).The purpose of this study is to: (1) know the history of Mormonism; (2) analyze the beliefs, practices, and organization of the movement from a biblical (Christian) perspective and; (3) explain the movementââ¬â¢s response to Biblical claims of Jesus Christ as well as why or why not I believe this group deserves the label of Contemporary Religious Movement (Cult).II. BackgroundA. HistoryMorm onism was founded by Joseph Smith (1805-1844), who lived as a youth near Palmyra, western New York. At 14 he began to have visions. In 1827, he announced that after revelation in 1823 he found golden plates with hieroglyphics, which he translated with divine aid and published as the Book of Mormon (1830). The golden plates were not made public, but 11 men testified that they had seen them. Smith founded the church in 1830 with sex members. The sect grew rapidly in numbers (ââ¬Å"Interview of Martin Harrisâ⬠).In 1831 the Mormons established their first temple in Kirtland, Ohio, near Cleveland, but the group suffered severe financial problems and lost many of its members.à Other Mormons settled in Independence, Missouri. Soon forced to move because of the hostility of their neighbors, they next founded the town of their neighbors, they next founded the town of Far West in Caldwell County. In 1838-39 they were driven out of Missouri because of religious prejudice and fear of Mo rmon political power.The refugees next settled in Commerce, Illinois, and renamed the town Nauvoo. Here on swampy land along the Mississippi the Mormons built an impressive city of about 20,000, then the largest city in Illinois. Again there was religious persecution and bitter strife over the growing political power of the Mormons. A new source of conflict was the doctrine of polygamy introduced by Joseph Smith. In 1844, Smith was murdered by a mob. Because of continued harassment by their neighbors, the Mormons abandoned Nauvoo in 1846 (ââ¬Å"Mormonismââ¬â¢s History,â⬠2006).III. DiscussionThe Mormons believe their church is the true modern successor of the early church of Jesus Christ. The churchââ¬â¢s aim ââ¬Å"is to prepare the world, by the preaching of the restored gospel and the founding of the Latter-day Zion, for the Messiahââ¬â¢s second coming and the advent of the millennium.A. BeliefsThe Mormons accept the Bible as sacred and look upon the Book of Mormon as equal to it in authority. But I strongly believe that there is no book in the world that would equal to the Bible, not even the Book of Mormons because this Scripture (Bible) is God-breathed as stated in second Timothy chapter 3 verse 16 ââ¬Å"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.â⬠This would mean that the writers of the Bible are inspired and anointed by the Spirit of God (Barlow, 1997).The Book of Mormons tells the history of an ancient band of Jewish exiles believed by Mormons to be the ancestors of the American Indians but the Bible is silent about it. Other books of scripture are the Doctrine and Covenants, a collection of revelations given through the founder, Joseph Smith; and the Pearl of Great Price, containing the writings-not found in the Bible-which Mormons believe are revelation of Abraham and Moses. Moreover, I contest that the church should not be under the beliefs of its founder but s hould be followed by the teachings of Jesus Christ, who is the head of the church.The Mormons believe in continuous revelation by God. Yes, I agree to it but the revelation must always be in the context of the Scripture; thus, anything that is not in the word of God is not of God. In addition, the Mormons believe that God the Father and his son Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith. Individual members may receive revelations from God for the guidance of their own lives. But only one man at a time may receive revelations from God for the whole church, and he is the president of the whole church. Mormons emphasize faith in Jesus Christ and repentance for sins (Barlow, 1997).I disagree to what the Mormons believe because no one ever sees God. Even Moses and Abraham and other great men of God did not see him face to face because no one can stand in his presence for he is a Holy God. When God appeared to Moses, God showed himself in a form of burning bush and Moses trembled because of Go dââ¬â¢s presence. Moreover, God can do anything he wants to do because he is an omnipotent God. He can speak to different people at the same time. He doesnââ¬â¢t only reveal himself and speak to the leader of the church but also reveal himself and speak to us individually through the Holy Spirit and his words because God has no favoritism.B. PracticesThe Mormons baptize by immersion for the remission of sins and practice laying of hands for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Holy Communion is celebrated with bread and water. In the Bible, the remission of sin is through the blood of Jesus Christ. Water baptism is mentioned in the Bible but it simply signifies that you buried your old life and new life has waited for you.The Mormons have two practices exclusive with them: baptism for the dead and celestial marriage. Baptism for the dead is chiefly for ancestors not baptized as Mormons; a living person is baptized in proxy for the dead. A celestial marriage is one in which a couple is married under the authority of the priesthood in a Mormon temple and is ââ¬Å"sealed for eternityâ⬠so that in the celestial kingdom the family the family relationship will be resumed. Marriages outside a temple are for life on earth only (Givens, 1997). From the 1840ââ¬â¢s until 1890, Mormon doctrine permitted ââ¬Å"plural marriage,â⬠or polygamy. I would say that these teachings are not found and written in the Bible. Our marriage to our partner here on earth is only temporary.Mormon temples are used only for secret rites, primarily those of celestial marriage and baptism of the dead. They are open only to Mormons of good standing. Sunday services are held in local churches called ward halls, and non-Mormons are welcomed. Visitors may also enter the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, which is used for conferences and concerts (Davies, 2003).Mormonism looks upon health as a spiritual value and bans the use of liquor, tobacco, coffee, and tea. Recreation is encouraged. Th ere is emphasis on education and on work and thrift. The church operates a vast welfare program for its members who are in need, and it disapproves of public aid. Members support the church by tithing (giving one-tenth of their gross income).à On the other hand in the Bible, we are taught that our body is the temple of the Living God as stated in first Corinthians chapter 6 verses 19-20 that is why we should take care of our bodies because we need to glorify Godââ¬âbody, soul and Spirit.IV. ConclusionIn conclusion, I will base my belief according to the word of God which is theà Bible so I would say that Mormonism or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is a cult because it does not follow fully to the word of God. They have practices and beliefs which cannot be found in the Scripture. As I said earlier, anything that is not from the word of God is not of God. Though they may claim that they believe on Jesus Christ yet their practices are not in line the teaching s of Jesus.Reference:1. ââ¬Å"Mormonismââ¬â¢s Historyâ⬠. Bachelor in business and management studies
In this contemplation essay I will discourse my experience in working in-group, composing accomplishment and take notes skill, enchantress is truly touch my demands. To began with, my first work in group at UWIC that was at the beginning of term one, we informed by the leader of concern in context faculty that we have 20 % of entire appraisal will be a group presentation ( 15 -20 proceedingss ) , besides the subjects will be assigned in 3rd seminar ( Week 4-12 ) , and the presentation will get down from hebdomad 33 ( 14 March 2011 ) . That sound makes me exciting because I liked to work in-group, where I already have some cognition from my working in ministry of wellness, Sultanate Of Oman. After that, during that term, the faculty coach, Andrea steel divided the category pupil to different groups.A Me, George Cliff, Laura Colligan, and Catherine Casey to be in one group called group E. Because of the group is assorted between male childs and misss, I though the group will be more active. Anyhow, this group must sit to garner during the seminars until the coach give us the subject of the presentation that we have to do.A Than, seminar after seminar, I shocked that no 1 came to that group except Laura, me, and sometimes Catherine attended. I discussed with Laura that we could n't work without the remainder group. So, we decided to talk to our coach to see what can she make. The response from our coach was to believe about allotment us to anther groups and she would direct an e-mail inform us witch group that we will fall in. I became Sade because I will non work in that group. In the last hebdomad of the first term, precisely on 16/12/2010, I received an electronic mail sent to all pupils in the category for regeneration all groups.A Besides the subjects were given ( To what extent is leading different from direction? ) that is my group subject. Fortunately, there was no alteration in my group members ; besides the coach increased the squad members to be five instead than four.A William Gray has been joined the group ( Appendix 1 ) . Furthermore, there is a deadline that we must subject a transcript of the presentation on 04/03/2011. After Christmas interruption, in the 2nd term, we started the study.A As usual, most group squad did non go to the seminar group.A My co-worker Laura three to reach some members that we should run into to complete the work, but no Convincing reply. Day by twenty-four hours, Laura and me started to fix the presentation. That make me to work under presser, we had to complete the presentation before the deadline. AndA besides theA work will beA limited toA two. ThisA does notA accomplish theA goalA ofA the group ââ¬Ës work. But we do n't hold option except complete our work, and me, her and possibly Catherine and George both will fall in us at the presentation twenty-four hours ( as Laura said ) . Differently we completed ( Laura and me ) the work and handed in I-zone on clip. It is truly bad experience to me to be in group non earnestly and did non take the duty of the work that we should did as a group. I agreed that the work finished by the clip, but non by two members merely from originally five members. The Surprising is, at the suggested twenty-four hours of the presentation, all group work met for the first clip. Indeed, that mad me disappointed from this group. As a group we should cognize the advantages of working in-g roup and what we should achieved. At least, I should inform faculty Tutor about that but I did non make that due to Laure takes the duty of our work. She said ; she would wish to be the squad leader, so the squad leader must inform the module leader of any non active members in the squad as we informed antecedently. I am abashed that I did non took the duty to inform the faculty leader or the coach about what happened in this group from the beginning and left that to Laura. Because she is sympathetic with the members, she did non inform the specializer. As Burns and Sinfield ( 2003 ) concluded, ââ¬Å" If you can non work with other people, you are improbable to be able to maintain a occupation â⬠. I think the simple and really effectual scheme is to take my group with attention. Choose people who are as motivated, positive and hardworking. Consequently, I faced the job with my group since the group may non involvement to work in this group in peculiar. Besides some pupils may happen it hard to take part in a group. Group work offers many advantages to us as a pupil. One thing it offers an chance to portion the work load. It is easer to make some research in the presentation subject if I portion it out. Furthermore, it gives the opportunity to discourse things in-group and every one in the group will larn more if they had merely done something on their ain. Not merely this, it besides get to polish the personal and inter personal accomplishments if we learn to discourse thoughts and negotiate schemes with tact and diplomatic i n my group. Another advantages of group work is that a good group offers societal support that can interrupt down some of the isolation sometimes associated with being a pupil. Another accomplishment I would wish to discourse approximately in this essay is my writing manner. Trough the academic Year there is a figure of assignments I had to make. The coachs ââ¬Ë feedbacks indicate the betterment in my authorship. For illustration, in the Entrepreneurship and Enterprise faculty assignment feedback signifier was reference that, I am first-class in research and really good in construction presentation ( appendix 2 ) . That gives me the inducement to better my authorship for the following assignments. That is due to the techniques that I used within to better the quality of my response to the assignment undertaking. As Wallace ( 2004 ) and Longman and Atkinson ( 2005 ) Argues, the techniques are: Using definitions and illustrations: when composing it is frequently utile to specify cardinal footings in order to forestall confusion or misinterpretation. Generally, I can do clearly statement by giving an illustration. But I can non turn out anything by giving illustration. There may be counter-examples that I have ignored or overlooked. In my assignment I tried to utilize definitions and illustrations because I know it makes my position clearer, besides that gives indicate to reader of my points. Evidence, deduction and illation: when I want to back up my statement, I have to include some grounds. Because that implied the dependability of my authorship. Drafting and re-drafting: composing assignment non like composing an reply in an test, I likely have clip to compose my reply merely one time in test. Whereas composing an assignment is non timed. So, that able me to compose more than one bill of exchange. Re-drafting is painless when I used a word processer for my authorship ; it is greatly heighten the quality of my written work. Overall impact ( coherence and signposting ) : many first bill of exchanges suffer from non being consistent plenty and from being inadequately signposted. To avoid being in that state of affairs, I tried to accomplish much greater impact in my authorship by: Signpost the construction in a helpful manner. Make it clear to the reader ( hangs together ) Proofreading: its 2nd and concluding phase of re-drafting. I concerned to look into in inside informations for illustration, spelling, punctuation, pages numbered, spell-check, and whether grammar is right. Mentions: I ever make certain that all beginnings referred to in the listed of mentions. Furthermore, mentions must to be in the right alphabetical order, displayed in the appropriate manner, and besides complete in that they contain all the required beginning information. Writer ââ¬Ës family name is most of import for alphabetical ordination. Writing really assist me to develop creativeness and contribute to my ability to analyse chief thoughts and reflect in my authorship. I will concentrate in reading more books because that will supply me with the cognition of composing different manners such as studies or thesis. Taking note is another of import factor that contribute to the success of pupils in their academic old ages. That is one of my failings since the beginning of the academic twelvemonth. I ne'er take the important of taking note during the talks or seminars. I face job when I performed the economic test in the managing markets module in 2nd term, because I had non take the duty of the of import of note pickings. Notes serve several intents. First, some talk information might non be in the text or press releases, so I need to enter this information for future mention. Second, the information emphasized in a talk frequently signals what will be on test, and that ââ¬Ës ground adequate for taking notes. Third, category notes serve as a agency of external storage. As I am a busy pupil, I can non retrieve every thing I hear accurately. Therefore, notes serve as alternate signifier of memory ( Longman & A ; Atkinson 2005 ) . Note taking AIDSs callback in several ways. First, note pickings is a multisensory activity that requires more attempt than mere hearing does. This extra attempt additions my acquisition and provides extra ways for me to hive away, and subsequently recover, information. Because I do n't hold clip to compose of all time thing that ââ¬Ës said by lector, I have to be selective. This selectivity helps me to be attending to the information. Given that I have already made some witting determinations about the importance of the information, I am more likely to retrieve it. Finally, as I am taking notes, my paraphrasis, form, and understand information to link this new information to my background. Therefore, integrate new thoughts more to the full and remember them more efficaciously ( Longman & A ; Atkinson 2005 ) . There is no individual right manner to take notes. Some note taking schemes my will assist to better this accomplishment. For illustration, symbols, layout, highlighting, circling on paper, abbreviation, underlining, and usage of capital letters. Besides I need to day of the month each twenty-four hours notes because this provides mention point if I need to compare my notes with person. Furthermore, I have to reexamine my notes every bit shortly as possible after taking them. That allowed me to accomplish more so pupils who do n't reexamine notes. ( Wallace 2004 ) & A ; ( Longman & A ; Atkinson 2005 ) .

Impact of the Computer and Internet Essay
Computers first made there debut and have been around since in the 1940s and the Internet since in the 1970s. Computer were large single room unit that have changed into hand held devices and microchips. The Internet was a blog where people from all over the world could post questions and get answers and now the Internet has become a global search engine. In the future, computers and the Internet will not only continue to evolve; they will be every day aspect to living in this society. Computers will be the new tools for communication and also play a big part in our every day life. In the future, our dayââ¬â¢s tasks will be checked using a personal robotic butler, the misplaced car keys will be located by entering the word keys into a cellphone and getting a call back saying bedroom. Our cars will be self driven and would be able to park themselves. After work, there may be ads on the shopping mall wall reconfigure to suit each person passing by, so when there is a sign for a concert, you buy a ticket by waving your cellphone over the billboard. This next wave of computers will be so small they hardly seem like computers at all. The screen of billboards will be able to broadcast different ad depending on the time of day or the person walking past. People will be able take a picture of the ad using their camera phones and use it as a coupon for the product being advertised. They may also be able to project imagies of family member which you talk to them on telephone call. In the future, the number one major issue will be privacy. We are currently leaving a digital footprints and it will only grow larger in the future. Tracking someone can be iillgal and has raised troubling privacy issues but in recents years people are giving up this information free. Websites like Twiter, Myspace and Facebook give people the ablity to post and check into area all around the world. People are also allowing strangors to know if they are on vaction and even some people are allowing their address and information to be put on these sites. The social inpact of allowing computer to expand will be huge. Police and government surveillance could go beyond wiretapping to body-tapping. Big business could track a personââ¬â¢s spending and shopping habits. On the criminal front, the sensors could enable better stalking, kidnapping, and theft now that our every location is broadcast to the world. The only way weââ¬â¢re going to be able to have privacy in the future is to have it legislated. People want our data and will do anything to get it. We need to be able to protect ourselves and the only was to do it in the future is to not allow computer to tap into our lives. The internet brings as wide an audience together as possible. With the importance of accessibility getting the recognition it deserves lately. Rather than reading and clicking, the people will be able to tell a browser where they want to go with spoken commands. People now read newspapers watch television and listen to the radio via the Internet and soon all of our communications phones, TV, and the Web will be delivered over a high-speed ââ¬Å"broadbandâ⬠connection. People are also creating their own media including blog posts, music and videos and sharing them with huge audiences without needing permission from the gatekeepers. The Internet is changing the way most everyone experiences media. According to Free Press. com ââ¬Å"It could become the central nervous system of a healthy democracy the greatest engine for free speech, civic engagement and economic growth ever knownâ⬠. It may be our last, best hope to make an end-run around the traditional media gatekeepers. There is a similar threat to society because of the open Internet today, and the stakes couldnââ¬â¢t be higher. High-speed Internet access is fast becoming a basic public necessity, just like water or electricity. To protect free-flowing Internet access for everyone, people need to get involved. It has gone from lifeless and robotic to something a lot more palatable in the last few years, and seems to continue to improve. Another issue could be keeping some users away because that the Internet can be a vast and scary place. Audio surfing could be perfect for the commuters, children learning to read, step-by-step tutorials as well as the casual multitasking user. In the future, web surfing could be available on any device. It seems the technology industry is eager to integrate the Internet into every device. People will start by adding touch-screens to fridges and other appliances might create new opportunities and challenges for interfacing. Touch screen technology is only scratching the surface on intuitive pproaches to interfacing. More widespread Internet delivery will mean reaching a wider audience. The major weakness to the increase of connected devices comes in the same flavor as the raging net neutrality issues being discussed today. If the Internet is tied into content devices like televisions, broadcasting companies might start pulling more of their annoying control-freak shenanigans in an attempt to capture a greater audience. This will be temporary; the battle of old-media vs. the Internet has only one ending for years, the Internet has been about serving the singular user. With the growing need and importance of online community, multiple-user experiences seem like the next logical step. The social impact of the internet will be negative at the rate the internet is going. As people use the internet more, they will be able to keeping up with people more, spending less time talking with their families, and feeling more lonely and depressed due to the lack of human interaction. These results can change interpersonal communication was their most important reason for using the Internet. Online platforms, for instance, have reduced the costs of communicating and minimized the impact of barriers like time and geography. In conclusion, computers and the Internet will not only continue to evolve; they will be every day aspect to living in this society. Computers will be the new tools for communication and also play a big part in our everyday life. The internet will bring us wider audiences and accessibility to people all over the world. Both will have negative and positive aspect in society but may bring the world as we know it closer.
